Rumour: Nokia's first Nseries touchscreen arriving shortly

The N96 is only just cooling on the shelves and the Nokia Tube barely exists beyond some official press pics and hands-on impressions, but it looks there's something else on the horizon to get even more excited about. A Nokia exec has let slip that a touchscreen Nseries handset is already in the pipeline.Devinder Kishore, Nokia India's Director of Marketing, revealed during a press event that "Nokia will have lots of touchscreen phones coming up, including an Nseries device very soon."

That new Nseries handset might be the N97, seeing as the N96, successor to the N95, has just been launched. Unfortunately, that same logic can also be used to calculate that we'll be waiting until late 2009 / early 2010 to get our mitts on it.

Fortunately Cellpassion.mobi, the website which broke the story, reckons that it might be out considerably sooner than that though. It puts a loose date of early 2009 on the phone handset.

We have yet to get our hands on Nokia's debut S60 touchscreen handset for a proper road test. But given how many phone manufacturers have struggled to nail their touchscreen interfaces down to Apple-like precision, we're keeping sceptical hats firmly on. But even if it does fail to live up to expectations, a follow-on touchscreen Nseries would benefit from a few extra months polishing the kinks out of the system.
