Sony's netbook game with VAIO W

Sony did take a stand against manufacturing netbooks simply because the profit margin was so low, and with the company’s notorious reputation of pricing their goods beyond the average figure, consumers who are looking for a cheap and yet decently equipped netbook will most probably pick one from Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Gateway and numerous other players in the game. In fact, when Sony unveiled the VAIO P at CES earlier this year, they went so far as to inform everyone not to call it a netbook. Well, guess the Japanese company will have to eat their own words this time round as they attempt to make some headway into the netbook crowd with its newest VAIO W Series.

In typical Sony fashion, the VAIO W will feature an ultra-portable design, making it perfect for use as a secondary computing device that is lightweight enough to be carried with you halfway around the globe without having to break your back while you’re at it. There are three colors to choose from - berry pink, sugar white and cocoa brown, where the exterior hue is subtle while the touchpad is lined with a splash of brightness. According to Mike Abary, senior vice president of the VAIO business group at Sony, “The W Series lets you quickly look something up online whether searching for a recipe in the kitchen or relaxing on your recliner - there’s no need to trudge upstairs to your office. And it’s sturdy enough for the kids to use, making it perfect for every member of the family.”

Features of the W Series include a high-resolution, 1366 x 768, LED backlit 10.1″ ultra-wide display, an isolated keyboard with springy and responsive keys, integrated webcam and microphone, a 160GB hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity, a touchpad and mouse keys to make you feel more at home, and is ENERGY STAR 5.0 compliant as well as EPEAT Gold registered to denote Sony’s effort in helping keep its products green and clean. Prices of this Windows XP Home-powered netbook start from $500 upwards.

PlayStation 3 exclusive gaming rundown

As Sony starts to make a push for the holiday season with a new bundle and rumors of slimmer hardware, we all know that exclusive software remains as the biggest selling point for any console.

We recently showcased a handful of Xbox 360 titles that will be available only on that console. Now it's time to take a look at what the PlayStation 3 has to offer in the coming months.

PlayStation 3 owners already enjoy franchises like Resistance and Ratchet and Clank, but will finally get a taste of some series that have yet to debut on the PS3.

There are also a few titles we left out just because information on them is still very scarce. While we're excited for exclusive titles like The Last Guardian, we're not sure of a release date.

80GB PS3 bundle is totally shipping

Over the weekend a certain special bundle was revealed to be incoming at Best Buy. We heard it was to be made available next Sunday, but it looks like they’ve jumped the gun a little bit and you can order it online right now. You’ll have to ship it, though — no in-store pickup. Incredibly, shipping that megalith of a console is only $9, though, so your savings remain intact. There’s also a Wall-E/LittleBigPlanet bundle for the same price if you’re buying this thing for your kid.

Xplorer X7-Xtreme S1: Gaming Laptop

Intel Core i7 processor, X58 chipset, 6 gigs of memory, and an Nvidia GTX 280M... Anyone want to play Crysis?

This is no desktop mash-up I'm talking about, but a 17-inch laptop. CyberPower announced today the release of its latest gaming computer, the Xplorer X7-Xtreme. This notebook is one of the first, alongside Falcon Northwest and other custom computer builders, to feature an Intel Core i7.

Microsoft introduces hands-free gaming

Microsoft revealed this week that it has secretly been developing technology that lets people play videogames using natural body mo
vements instead of handheld controllers.

The US software giant behind Xbox 360 videogame consoles revealed a prototype of a project codenamed ‘Natal’, a system that combines cameras and voice and face recognition software to recognise people and their actions.

"The gamer in me went out of my mind when I got to be interactive with this," famed film director Steven Spielberg during a Microsoft press conference on the eve of a major videogame industry show, Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), in Los Angeles. "I got a feeling I was in a historic moment. What Microsoft is doing isn't re-inventing the wheel; this is about no wheel at all."

Natal lets people play driving games by simply moving hands as if turning a car steering wheel. In-game characters in boxing, skateboard, soccer and other sports titles mimic the body movements of real-world players. The system scans faces and voices to determine who is playing, a demonstration showed. Xbox 360 consoles equipped with Natal will be able to respond to spoken commands for actions such as playing movies or connecting online with friends for video chats.

An expected completion date for Natal was not disclosed, but Microsoft released a software kit for videogame makers interested in designing titles to take advantage of Natal's capabilities.

"What developers do with Natal will change the way we play videogames," said British videogame icon Peter Molyneux, chief of Lionhead Studios. "This is a landmark in computer entertainment. This is true technology that science fiction has not even written about and this works today." Natal will work on all Xbox 360 consoles, said the head of Xbox and games business at MS.

Sony's 100 New Games in PlayStation 2 This Year

Sony today kicked off its E3 2009 media event at the Shrine Auditorium today by highlighting the PlayStation 2, the company's nine-year-old console, which is nearing the end of the 10-year life cycle, the company projected. Still, despite the age of the system and the introduction of its successor, the PlayStation 3, CEO Jack Tretton announced that the console will see 100 new titles introduced this year alone.

Said Tretton of the $99 console, "We're committed to the PS2 for as long as users see value in it."

Sony Confirms the PSP Go

Sony today made official what it called "the worst-kept secret of E3," the PSP Go. The device is the latest iteration of the company's popular handheld gaming console, the Play Station Portable. The new device is slimmer and offers a number of new features, includeing 16GB of internal flash memory, built-in Wi-Fi, and Integrated Bluetooth.

The company is also introducing Media Go, which will replace the Media Manager as a PC-accessible store.

The device will be available on October 21st for $249.99. Sony was careful to stress the fact that the device will not be replacing the PSP 3000. The company has expressed its commitment to both devices, as well as to UMD, despite the fact that the new device will no longer support that media platform.

Nintendo's "Wii Fit" exercise program has topped the video-game sales charts since its debut a year ago.
But come
on, folks: Surely you've mastered the sun salutation and the downward-facing dog by now and you're ready for something more vigorous.

EA Sports Vice President Dave McCarthy says his company watched the success of "Wii Fit" and decided to take a different approach. "We want to get your heart rate going, get a bit of a sweat going," he says. The result is "EA Sports Active," the first fitness program from the company better known for sports simulations like "Madden NFL" and "NBA Live."

"In 30 minutes you can burn a bunch of calories," McCarthy says. EA describes its high-intensity focus as "Western fitness," as opposed to the emphasis on balance and yoga in "Wii Fit." "Active" also features a "30-Day Challenge," a prescribed workout routine that provides a bit more structure than Nintendo's program.

EA is aiming "Active" squarely at women, with ads flooding daytime television. The software features Oprah Winfrey's fitness guru, Bob Greene. And Alison Sweeney, star of NBC's "Days of Our Lives" and "The Biggest Loser," has been making the promotional rounds.

"It's hard to get out to the gym," Sweeney says. "I had (`Active') in my bedroom and had to look at it every day. It's a great way to keep focused."

Pushing Daisy: Pilates, developed in the 1920s, has really caught on in the last decade. One of its followers, former MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes, has made a bundle off Pilates DVDs, and now she's bringing the discipline to the Wii.

Sega's "Daisy Fuentes Pilates" uses the Wii controls, including the Balance Board, to monitor your movements and ensure you're doing the exercises the right way. "It focuses on the connection between your mind and body, giving you smooth control over your movements," she says. "And the Wii is a great way to practice it."

"Daisy Fuentes Pilates" is scheduled for release later this summer.

I walk the line: Having opened up the "exergaming" market, Nintendo is hardly ignoring the genre. Its latest attempt to get gamers off the couch is "Personal Trainer: Walking," for the portable DS.

The package includes two pedometers. You can stick one in your pocket, go about your daily routine and then feed your stats into the game cartridge through a wireless hookup. You get plenty of charts and graphs to monitor your progress, but the overall package doesn't have nearly as much variety as "Wii Fit."

Still, the second pedometer lets you challenge a family member. Or you can attach it to your dog if you want to feel really lazy.
